The Community Meeting on the 14th of Nov was a huge success with in excess of 490 people attending. TOES will be doing press & news releases, passing the resolutions that were agreed, creating a survey and sending out regular updates to TOES members.
Each day Onehunga is subject to increasing traffic volumes resulting in grid lock which has a negative impact on the quality of residential and business community. We have the extreme situation where trucking companies are having to spend $750,000-00 to buy additional trucks just to meet their deliver schedules which is the poor use of a companies financial resource because of congestion. All of the community design options provide high speed seamless transport corridors that link the EWL to SH20 and avoids the destruction of the historic heart of Onehunga.
NZTA's current proposal will separate the Port of Onehunga from the Onehunga Mall and new railway station. Currently 70,000 vehicles use Mangere Bridge each day and when the Waterview tunnels opens early next year daily traffic volumes are expected to reach some 170,000 movements each day. So over the upcoming christmas holidays the SH20 motorway will be widened between the Port of Onehunga and Queenstown Rd off ramp to address this connection problem. The Neilson St railway bridge is also to be removed because it is to low for the new electric trains and the announcement by Auckland Airport that heavy rail to the airport is no longer an option.
The project is one of Auckland’s top priority transport projects and is featured in the ‘Auckland Plan’ – the planning guide for the city. The link is critical to support the Onehunga and Penrose areas which are the industrial and manufacturing engine room of the economy. Together with Mt Wellington and East Tamaki, these areas contribute over 15% of the city’s GDP. The project will improve access to the rail freight hub at Southdown and also improve travel times for freight, motorists and public transport users.
- Improved travel times between the industrial area and State Highways 1 and 20
- Better walking and cycling routes between Mangere Bridge, Onehunga town centre and Sylvia Park
- More reliable bus journey times

COMMENT BY DENISE KRUM:
The critical issue is not the [temp] ownership of the Port, it's the design of the East-West project.
The next obvious steps are to get the community-based design costed up, and for NZTA to realise getting their current design through the regulatory process is going to be quite the challenge!
