NGA HAU MANGERE - THE NEW MANGERE BRIDGE

Date: 04/06/2023

One of the changes to the foreshore that was opened in August 2022 was the replacement of the old Mangere Bridge. This fantastic asset to Auckland has been recognised in this year’s New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA), awards. The firm Bossley Architects Ltd received the award in the Planning & Urban Design category with the Institute describing the bridge as “This elegant piece of public infrastructure spans the Manukau harbour at Onehunga – once a traditional meeting point for Maori and close to original portage crossings to the Waitemata. The bridge deck and fabricated steel arch combine with artwork and the kahawai-inspired coloured balustrade in a compelling illustration of long-held mana whenua connections to land, sea and sky. With sight lines north to Maungakiekie One Tree Hill and south to Mangere, the bridge provides passage for pedestrians and cyclists and has become a much-loved fishing venue. Innovative and grounded through narrative, intent and a true sense of place, this community destination is an inspirational asset for people across Tamaki Makaurau.”
