WORKING TOWARDS A BETTER FUTURE FOR GREATER ONEHUNGA
The Onehunga Enhancement Society (TOES) was formed in 2006 by a group of concerned community members regarding the extension of SH20. The original plan when the SH20 motorway was built across Onehunga Bay resulted in the removal of the original foreshore and disconnected the seaside community from its harbour. At the time it was agreed that the foreshore was to be reinstated but the community waited 40 years for it to happen. The new foreshore would not have been delivered had the community not come together forming the advocacy group TOES. This group was successful in negotiating the $28m foreshore restoration program which to date is the largest reclamation for it’s purpose in New Zealand and is the first reclamation not to be tested in the environment court.
This project was driven by the community from the bottom up not top down. By bringing local business and community groups together TOES, central and local government agencies were able to produce a successful outcome.
The Onehunga Enhancement Society will live up to its responsibilities to the community and will maintain its position as the guardian of Onehunga’s past, present and future.
The regeneration of the Port of Onehunga which has been identified by Panuku and local community groups for future development to help deliver Auckland’s Unitary Plan.
Moving forward TOES will once again need to be treated as a key stakeholder to represent both the residential and business communities in the ongoing design process of the East West Link. It is of the utmost importance to the Onehunga Community that these critical infrastructure projects are interface with the Redevelopment of Onehunga, The Port of Onehunga and the new Mangere Pedestrian Bridge. To ensure the community maintains connectivity is able to support sustainable growth in the future and realise its full potential.
